Christeen Francis is a printmaker and musician based in St John’s, NL where she works as director of St Michael's Printshop. She completed her BFA at NSCAD (2005), ran a screenprint shop in New York City before returning to her hometown of Montreal to complete an MFA at Concordia University (2019). She is committed to social and political print that engages with local communities and the public at large. She has exhibited in Canada, the United States, Germany, and Iceland, and is a member of Justseeds Artist Cooperative. Her research interests include the right to the city, urban wildlife and wild spaces, and the homogenization of cities and culture. 

Christeen’s work considers the context of the city; the lived realities of its inhabitants, the politics of displacement, the concept of home, and the trauma of constant change and restructuring. She Focuses on the changing concept of what it means to live in cities, as well as what cities should be, and for whom they should be designed; with the goal of finding possibilities for coexistence within them. The process-oriented nature, physical restrictions, and possibilities of printmaking have been pivotal in the development of her artwork. She uses print to communicate ideas surrounding complex issues, and to create a space for dialogue and exchange. Through integration of digital technology and traditional print techniques, combined with the practices of political poster making, she is developing a visual language that is as fragmented and varied as the subject matter addressed within it.
